Enrolling my child in secondary education

Summary

You are free to enrol your minor child in the school of your choice and can contact the school of your choice directly.

There are nine secondary schools in the German-speaking Community. These are either organised by the German-speaking Community or are part of the free subsidised education system and subsidised by the Community.

Secondary education comprises the following forms of education:

  • general education
  • technical transitional education,
  • technical qualificational education,
  • vocational education.

It is divided into three levels:

  • the 1st level – the so-called observation level;
  • the 2nd level – the so-called guidance level;
  • the 3rd level – the so-called level of determination.

The Certificate of Lower Secondary Education is awarded after successful completion of the 3rd year of general and technical secondary education or after the 4th year of vocational secondary education.

The Certificate of Upper Secondary Education is awarded after successful completion of the 6th year of general and technical secondary education or after the 7th year of vocational secondary education.

A Certificate of Qualification is awarded after successful completion of the qualifying examination at the end of the 6th year of technical qualificational secondary education and 6th and 7th year of vocational secondary education.

Besides secondary education, there are also two part-time teaching centres as well as the possibility to follow an at a Centre for Education and Training in Middle Classes (ZAWM).
